The Morning After by gardencat

The Morning After

How I'm feeling today, and I don't even live there.
Very somber composition. I am very grateful for your post. We Americans are now facing a very rocky and stormy time.

So many folk are expressing the same shock and fear.

Half of the people that voted in this election are exuberant this morning and the other half are dejected. We were given a difficult choice between the two candidates. One won and one did not. The people spoke as they do in any election. Many voted and many stayed at home. Nevertheless a decision was made and now all Americans have to face the consequences of the choices we made. In a democracy normally the majority rules. However, we have seen occasions where that hasn't happened. When I went to bed last night there wasn't a winner and I slept like a baby. When I woke this morning to learn who the winner was, I still have no fear and that has nothing to do with who the winner is. I don't fear because I believe that there is a God who sits on His throne and He is sovereign. Nothing catches Him off guard.
If America rises from this election, praise God!
If America falls from this election, praise God!
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." ~ Isaiah 41:10

@skipt07 I'm a Canadian so I didn't vote in this election and I am still one of the dejected ones. I am sure God is with the people living in Mosul right now too, and they should probably be as fearless as you are, confident in his strength, still, I wouldn't like to be there.

@gardencat - I wasn't sure where you live Joanne as there isn't much information in your profile. Canadians watch our elections with great interest as we Americans do yours since we are close neighbors and often what goes on in Canada can effect the United States and what goes on in the United States can effect Canadians. I believe that Canadians and US Citizens have a great deal in common and we get a little apprehensive when there is a change in our governments as we both want to maintain healthy friendly relations with one another as allies.

God is very much interested about what is going on in Mosul. I know from from my limited understanding of Him through reading the Bible that He is saddened that we, his creation, are fighting among ourselves like we have.

@skipt07 So, if he is saddened by our fighting among ourselves, shouldn't we care about decisions that are made that we think are likely to lead to more fighting between us? It's fine to say that everything is in God's hands and we need not fear, but shouldn't we feel a concern when things are happening that look like they are going to lead to more discord between people or more unjust treatment of certain groups of people.

@gardencat - Good point! IBut here lies the problem. Oddly enough I am starting a study and the first part is about truth. What happened to right and wrong? Throughout most of history there has been an acceptance of absolute truth. But in the last 60 to 80 years there has been an influx and acceptance of what is called relative truth. Relative truth teaches that everybody's view is as important as another's. Who is to say what is right? What may be right for you isn't right for me. That has led to the kinds of trouble we see today. For ISIS they think that their thinking is right and they are going to kill everyone who disagrees with them. Relativism. Last night when it was announced that Trump was the winner, protesters began vandalizing other people's property and burning the American flag in California. Why? Because they didn't get what they wanted. Bernie Sanders was running against Hillary. He was very popular among young people because he told them that the government should give free education and free health care. Nothing is free! Someone has to pay for it. If we go back in American history that wasn't the way people thought. America offers opportunities. That is it. If you want something go earn it. The opportunities are there. But today's young people have bought into the lie. What was once called good is now called bad. And what was once or considered bad, is now embraced as good. Is that progress or is it the unacceptance of an absolute truth? That is why we see all the discord.

@skipt07 As Daniel Moynihan is reported to have written to Nixon, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts." However, more and more people seem not to care about the facts at all and to simply believe that saying something, even something that is demonstrably untrue, often enough, confirms some sort of veracity on it. And then , in this just past campaign I have heard people stating that, even if someone could show them that something was true, they wouldn't believe it if it went against the candidate they had chosen to support. They said this proudly as if believeing lies in support of their candidate was something praiseworthy.
In regards to your comment about "nothing being free" I guess it depends how you define free. If you, for instance, do work for someone and, when the work is done, they declare bankruptcy and refuse to pay for it, then I guess that work is free, or at least free to them, of course you are out the cost of the materials and the time, Maybe we could call that situationally free because in their situation it was free, But not in your situation. The way I was brought up, if you wanted something, you paid for it, you didn't take it, make a profit off it and then declare an inability to pay and walk away. The way I was raised, taking on debt that you knew you had little chance of ever being able to repay, was equivalent to planned stealing and was dishonourable, Nowadays apparently in some people's eyes at least, it is smart business.

I'm 9 days late with my commenting but I still don't feel any better about the outcome of this election, in fact each day when I listen to/watch the news I become increasingly worried. The President of the United States is probably the most important political figure in the world. What he decides to do will hugely affect all of our lives, ours in the UK, yours in Canada and most of the rest of the world and yet none of us has a say in who gets that job. Brexit followed by Trump!! What is happening to the world?
