What's going on here?

AT first, from the distance, I thought he was a mangy squirrel missing fur but when I got this shot I saw that he actually seems to have white fur on part of his back. We used to have a squirrel around here that was black with a puff of white fur at the end of his tail, looked a bit like a skunk from the distance, but never seen one like this before.
Great shot. Cute little guy. Black squirrels are listed as melanistic eastern grey squirrels. The white fur would make this black squirrel also leucistic, which is a partial loss of pigmentation. Total loss of pigmentation is albinism.

@lstasel so that would be a genetic trait then not something that would change over time.

@koalagardens I keep wondering if he is a cross between a squirrel and a skunk...we sure have enough of both around!
