What's Going On Here?

I think this is a larch tree of some kind but I'm not quite sure how these two kinds of hanging things relate to one another. Do the long skinny ones eventually dry out and shrink down into the more usual cones? If anyone has more knowledge of these trees, and what is going on here, I'd love to know. ETA: definitely not a larch probable an alder of some kind as @boxplayer pointed out below.

It looks like our alder and in which case they're both catkins - one type is female and one type male, alders have both on the same tree https://www.treeguideuk.co.uk/common-alder-identification/
