The Newport Southbank Bridge is popularly known as the Purple People Bridge. It is a pedestrian only bridge that stretches one half mile (2670 feet) across the Ohio River. The bridge connects Newport, Kentucky to downtown Cincinnati. These Love Locks were located in a designated area "in the spirit of love" on the bridge.
In 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court settled a long simmering debate between Kentucky and Ohio regarding the location of the boundary between these two states. The Court ruled the state line was the river's low water mark on the Ohio shore in 1792, the year Kentucky became a state. The ruling ended a 200 year dispute and more than 15 years of litigation and the boundary line is marked between Kentucky and Ohio near the middle of the bridge.
What a fascinating piece of history about the boundary line. Glad the locks have their own special place. I am never sure about them when they cover an entire structure. So interesting to read them and see the variety though. Great collage.
A great collage that really tells a story!
