A people without
the knowledge
of their past history,
origin and culture is
like a tree without roots.

After visiting Apple Hill, my friend and I spent the rest of the afternoon in the California Historical Landmark town of Placerville.
We walked in and out of several interesting shops on Main Street, ate a delicious lunch at Hey Day Cafe, checked out art and a decorated Christmas shop called Tree House. It started to get chilly and foggy before we left town and headed back, with leftover pizza and the doughnuts from Apple Hill. Yum.
The history of Placerville, formerly Hangtown and Old Dry Diggins, has its roots in mining and was once known for its notorious reputation for vigilante justice carried out by hangings. There is more information on Placer Gold and how the nickname "Hangtown" is tied to three men who were hung in 1849 for robbing a prospector.
I think you did a very nice job of showing Placerville and summarizing its infamous history. Have you been to Auburn. It’s another interesting town. Coloma is a fun place to visit as well, but it’s really a photo op experience if you wait until they have their special historical day where people dress in period clothes and they setup miner’s tent town.
@shutterbug49 Thank you. Yes, I love Auburn, Grass Valley, Sutter Creek, Jackson, Murphy and all the little historical gold mining towns. There are so many to discover!
