This little cactus (less than 3 inches in diameter) was blooming for only the second time this year when I visited my mom and stepdad. They were so proud of the eight open blooms, which only last a couple of days before dropping off, and I was "lucky" to visit that day. It seems to fit for the word of the day for Friday the 13th, which is superstition.
What is a superstition?
A superstition is a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or irrational thoughts. The belief is steeped in lore or tradition, and it is usually difficult to pinpoint the exact origin. Superstitious people avoid cactus plants with the belief that they may cause bad luck due to their thorns. A cactus growing near a home's door is supposed to save the occupants from troubles and a cactus inside the house could bring death to someone in that house. Since my birthday sometimes falls on Friday the 13th, I haven't ever really been superstitious. But thank goodness this cactus was outside on the porch near the door, just in case!
