One-room schoolhouses were common in rural areas in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. A single teacher usually taught all grade levels.
Although this old country school's life is apparently almost over, it can be proud of playing an important role in the education of many local children.
Instruction ends in the school-room, but education ends only with life. - Frederick W.Robertson
A great find--wonderful texture on the walls of this old schoolhouse. I like your processing too. I worked in an education library for 34 years before I retired, and I like what you say and the quotation you've used.
@juliedduncan Thanks Julie. A local farmer owns the land and a few years ago was using it to store square bales of hay. It doesn't look like it is structurally safe now.
@tristansmum Although this is local, we happened to drive by it on our way to a soccer game right after it had stopped raining. The wood was wet from the blowing rain and really drew attention to the old boards. Thanks for your comments Stephanie!
@brighteyes55 Thanks Pamela. I think my former next-door neighbor attended this school (or taught there). She went on to become a school teacher and is over 90 now. I'll have to ask her about this school.
great find Kim .. love the details .. especially viewed large ...something about dilapidated buildings that make them such interesting subjects ... informative narrative too ...I think this would make a great B/W too ... Fav!!
Intriguing to think of school in this old building. Further to your quote, I like the distinction the French make between what goes on in school = la scolarité and what goes on at home = l'éducation.
@sbolden Thanks Scott. @friend2303 Thanks for your comments and fav. I liked the b&w too and am posting it today for bww. @wilsonandstaciephotography@edorreandresen Thanks for your comments and favs! @cmsfk70 Thanks, I do too. @cimes1 Thanks. I fear with the roof collapsing it won't last much longer. @quietpurplehaze@anazad511 Thanks Hazel and Ana. It seems that schools do have a broader job these days than in the past. @ziggy77 Thanks Jo!
@ribbet9 Thanks for the fav Candace!

I agree and possibly so fundamental that we used to take it for granted and not even realise it was happening.............
