Went out to Tower Hill Nature reserve today as I heard there were many animals about. This echidna was one of the first I came across as he walked in front of my car! By the time I could stop, grab the camera and follow him, this was the only angle I could get! When I looked at it on the computer I actually liked the look of his backside :)
@smileclicksnap@kali66@hermann Thanks for great comments on this querky echidna :) @gigiflower@bella_ss@darthkitty@girlie@mbemis@pyrrhula Thanks all for terrific comments and favs. Really appreciate it and the fact you all loved his backside too :) @hellie Thanks Johanna. His spines are very strong and sharp, and purely for defence :) @cejaanderson Thanks Jane. I'd assume they are both quite similar, but have never seen a porcupine - you'll have to get a photo for me :) @janiskay Thanks Janice. They are Australian as you probably found out! Not his best angle though, but I thought it rather cheeky :)
@fjmom@kathiecb@lealady@terryliv Thanks for great comments on this echidna's backview! They are a very interesting animals and it's a delight to see one, even if it's the rear end! Now to find a puggle :) @Weezilou It's beginning to look like you need a visit down here - emus, echidnas, koalas, swans, kangaroos and of course a whale, all in my neighbourhood :)
@eyesmile Yes Gena you can actually view his (not his but another!) face in another shot I took back on 3rd March! That one walked in front of my car in one of the towns street! Porcupines & echidnas are very different - both mammals but porcupines are placental and belong to rodent family. Echidnas lay eggs. Porcupines are found in Nth America & Africa and are herbivorous. They are 80 - 115 cm in height, weigh 5-16 kgs and quills are 30cm long, sharp & strong. Echidnas are in Australia & PNG and eat ants & termites. They are only 30 -50 cms and weigh only 2-5 kgs. Their spines (as opposed to quills) are only 5 cms and are only a deterrent! Hope all of this is of interest :)
@gilbertwood Waqs going to make another comment and then paused to read your note above to Gena. That's fascinating! While I'm familiar with both, that's a lot of interesting and specific information! Thanks for that! ...how I'd love to return to Oz...Ken and I have been invited to the 90th birthday (or wake, as he joked!) of a dear friend there next Feb. We looked into it, but have spent so much on this house for the past year, we're thinking we better not... Every once in awhile I think a lottery windfall might be nice... I DO LOVE your animals!
