Yesterday was The Melbourne Cup - the race that stops a nation and is televised world wide. Many overseas horses are brought out and 24 horses are in the race. However history was made yesterday in the 155th year:
1) A local country trained horse won.
2) A female jockey, Michelle Payne, won - the first female to do so.
3) The strapper has Down Syndrome.
4) The odds were $101.
5) The horse, Prince of Penzance spent a lot of time training here on my beach :)
# This is NOT the horse but I had to go and watch the training this morning!
Awesome shot. First time ever I didn't have a bet. Believe it or not this was the horse that I had picked for my bet, but never got it on😢
Never the less great to see an Aussie horse with a female jokey...and what a strapper...
I have no interest in the Cup, but yesterday was historical and unforgettable. Michelle is so natural and will be an inspiration to a whole generation of girls.
It really was an amazing win, and how fantastic that a female jockey won! it looks like you have a new local celebrity. I have to dig through my photos from yesterday, I may have a photo of her just before the race.
Beautiful capture and the horses are gorgeous. Love the blurred background. A great achievement at the race. You and your neighbours must be so proud of 'your' horse.
@terryliv Only had a quick chance yesterday! I'll find more though :) As for Michelle, I don't blame you for falling in love with her - she is an inspiration to us all. Did you hear her life story? She's the youngest of 10 and her mum died when she was so young. I think the whole family is a credit to her dad too :)
Yes yes yes, a proud day for our Nation as far as breaking down barriers and prejudice - as a proud Mum of a son with Down Syndrome I had not a dry eye! Lovely composition and description!
@katrinastabback Thanks Kat :) I think we all had tears in our eyes on Tuesday! I also think Stevie would make a fantastic ambassador for all people with Down Syndrome. I spent nearly 40 years working with pre-school children with disabilities and I admire these children and their families. It's wonderful to see them in the community as they grow and reach their full potentials. I hope your son is achieving his dreams too :)
Nice shot and story Denise. I learned so much! Never knew horses trained on the beach. So happy for Michelle, I'm going to look up more about this historic event!
Great shot and story. There was quite a bit on the news here because a female jockey won. She seemed very sweet when interviewed and I think it's her brother who has Down's Syndrome isn't it and didn't he go on the podium with her? Fantastic story.

It ws a great outcome at the Melbourne Cup for all the good reasons. You are lucky to see the horses training on your beach.
