The bat tree by gilbertwood

The bat tree

During our walk n the Botanical Gardens we were so fortunate to find this highly rare tree. I'm sure it is quite a rarity world wide :)
Oooher!! Do they hang out there every day??

How cool!

Crikey. When we were at Raymond Terrace a few days ago the trees there are covered with bats. Unfortunately the smell of bat pooh was overpowering as we drove past and it was right next to a McDonalds so the combination of bats and Maccas was a bit too much, ha ha.

Really amazing!

I hope you weren't standing downwind. Have the bats caused the damage to the tree Denise?

August 30th, 2020
fantastic - we have lots of these colonies around here. such important pollinators and in such danger of extinction
August 30th, 2020
Such a cool find. Never seen anything like this (except in Scooby Doo cartoons!) :)
August 30th, 2020
Scared the life out of me seeing bats hanging in the trees in Oz, nothing like that over here thank goodness, interesting shot though Denise:)

@30pics4jackiesdiamond yes most days of the year. The numbers can vary but usually some there :)
@susiemc Theyre actually very easy to find - the are quite noisy!
@onewing Id refer the bats over Maccas any day :)
@merrelyn No damage to trees as they share themselves around many trees :)
@koalagardens Don't think they're in danger of extinction down here!
@4rky You'll have to come for a visit - when the world is back to normal :)
@pcoulson I actually find them quite interesting :)

@gilbertwood really? which flying fox are they? they look like grey headed and they are definitely listed as threatened in vic. if that was the entire colony in one tree it would be close to collapse I would think. did you know they are the main pollinator for the koala food trees?
August 30th, 2020
Oh my I haven't seen this tree before!

I've never seen anything like this before. Thanks for capturing it for us.

OMG, I'll bet you didn't venture underneath. Not a fan of bats, we had to pull out our fruit trees cos the bats got all the fruit.
August 31st, 2020
Wow, what a site to see. Super capture.
August 31st, 2020
@golftragic now you, and the bats have no fruit!!!
August 31st, 2020
@koalagardens They are grey headed bats and this is not them all. They love the Moreton Bay fig trees which are in the gardens (but you cant see them very well!) They also hang in the palm trees and a few others. Lots of good trees for them :) I didn't know about them being pollinators for the koalas - that's good :)

Great find

@gilbertwood I thought they were the grey headed ones. every time I come back to this page I laugh thinking who says bats don't grow on trees 🤣
August 31st, 2020
@koalagardens And I'm a bit worried with some of the comments - I think maybe some people really think they do grow on trees :)
August 31st, 2020
@30pics4jackiesdiamond I didn't put in all that effort and water to feed bats. There's also a growing body of research linking bats to a number of diseases too so not keen on them being in my garden.

Can't believe anyone really thinks they grow on trees!!!!
