An old typewriter on display at The Guildhall, Lavenham. I can remember my grandmother having something similar.
In my younger days I had a job where I typed classified documents and I had to remove the ribbon from the machine and lock it in the safe when I went to lunch or went home.
I learnt to type on such a machine. I was given a typewriter and an instruction book and spent some time each day in my new job learning how! So I could put notes in files about fertiliser plants being built around the world - sounds archaic now........
