The Wind Wand by graemestevens

The Wind Wand

Nothing to see here - this a kinetic sculpture by the inimitable Len Lye that was installed on our 14km Coastal Walkway as a millennium project (much to the disgust of the usual influential few who would like to believe that they know what everybody else wants and/or likes). It has a red light at the top to signal that all of the citizens of New Plymouth are open to the idea of prostitution (or something like that anyway) and will bend, sometimes quite dramatically, with the prevailing wind...that's usually a Westerly that happens to be strong enough to flay the skin from unsuspecting bodies.
Definitely an interesting sculpture. Does it measure the wind speed too?

That's fascinating! Almost choked on my salad, though, as I was eating dinner whilst reading your commentary. Thanks for a much-needed giggle after a tough day at work, Graeme! :)

quite a few could fit under that red light...a window display of choice - very thoughtful - I like it when the influential few are disgusted

Ha ha ha what a "sculpture"!!! Great shot 😊
October 27th, 2015
so it serves like a big, bendy red light? sounds real useful
October 27th, 2015
Very cool bendy wind thing. Love your SC. It's a really neat sculpture to photograph!
October 27th, 2015
wonderfully whimsical and a tad surreal :)
October 27th, 2015
crazy...nice wind wand! ;-)
October 27th, 2015
Perfect choice of selective color! And, I laughed out loud!
October 27th, 2015
wonderful capture ...fav

@pdulis Thanks very much :)
@lsanderson55 Pleased to have delivered at one laugh today ;)
@nanderson It's one of my favourite wands...
@northy As is most of Mr. Lye's work...a strange man...
@kerosene Thanks very much - it's even more fun on a windy day
@mindeater It does indeed - seriously considering getting one for my garden
@leanne333 Thanks very much :)
@annied I love it when the "powerful" lose a fight :)
@juliedduncan You're most welcome - now I've made two people laugh today...
@888rachel Sadly it doesn't, but it doesn't really need to as we only have two wind speeds here - none and bloody hell, hang on!!!
October 27th, 2015
I think you and Len Lye have a lot in common... I like to think that this is really Len sticking his finger up to the established art world.
October 27th, 2015
@vignouse I think that may be the best summation I've heard for the "why" of the Wind Wand yet. Defining art is impossible and yet so many try.
October 27th, 2015
I love it. You would never see such an installation here where I live, it's more than a bit stuck up here.
October 27th, 2015
Wow. Cool use of color. What an unusual sculpture.
October 27th, 2015
The SC makes this image pop agains the background. I am laughing at the idea of wind speeds, hang on, and flaying skin from unsuspecting bodies! It makes it sound dangerous to take a walk there.
October 27th, 2015
Goodness I never knew that was what it was all about.. @dide best come home it is not safe down there.. love your SC and I still like the sculpture..
October 27th, 2015
An interesting sculpture and story behind it...
October 27th, 2015
@dibzgreasley Thanks very much :) I'm not sure it's the completely true version. I may have made some of it up...
@julzmaioro Thanks very much - I'm not sure it's entirely true...
@rosiekerr They actually close the walk way during high seas and rough weather so yes, you could be risking life and limb. And skin.
@epcello Thanks very much - Len Lye's sculptures were always a bit different
@kategoring This town is quite backwards at time - they even forcibly protested the new art gallery!
October 27th, 2015
@graemestevens Wouldn't expect anything less :)
October 27th, 2015
Great splash of colour!
October 27th, 2015
That red is dramatically right for this image!
October 27th, 2015
Oh! I like this a lot
October 27th, 2015
very interesting!
October 27th, 2015
@cocobella That's Len Lye's work for you ;)
@mastermek It's one of my favourite sculptures of his :)
@jyokota Thank you very much :)
@alinz Thanks very much :)
October 27th, 2015
In most cases I really dislike SC. I'm not sure what you did to make it work here. It must be the little red spot in the mansion down below. Gonna look this work up on wide web if I have some spare time.
October 27th, 2015
Great image - looks great with this processing.
October 27th, 2015
It would look pretty spectacular on a windy night with the red light waving around :)
October 27th, 2015
Sue
Hahahaha, good on you Graeme. I bet the people of New Plymouth would be raising their eyebrows at your description! :-)
October 27th, 2015
@sioux They raise their eyebrows at so much that I do
@hermann It does indeed, but you need body armour to go out on a windy night around here
@dide Thank you very much :)
@mastermek I'm not a huge fan of SC either but it just didn't work any other way - it was a last resort
October 27th, 2015
I have seen this wand in real life but must say the towns women of New Plymouth looked pretty normal to me!
October 27th, 2015
Love it, and great use of S/C...fav
October 27th, 2015
@tonygig Thank you very much :)
@happypat That's what they want you to believe - come nightfall and no man is safe from a jolly good ravishing behind the bike shed ;)
October 27th, 2015
@graemestevens Ha ha you wish!
October 27th, 2015
@happypat I do, I really do ;)
October 27th, 2015
Cool!
October 28th, 2015
@joansmor Thanks very much :)
October 28th, 2015
Ooooh....oooh, color, I like it!! Very cool sculpture...very minimalist....sure about that prostitution thing? What, is it like a Red Light district or something? Oh, and a FAV!
October 30th, 2015
@panthora The whole town is a red light district ;) And thank you
