The Need for Greed. by graemestevens

The Need for Greed.

I've posted a lot of photos of "my" beach in the past and New Zealand has a reputation for being "clean and green". If, when you arrive at "my" beach and use the main car park, you can get out of your car and instead of admiring the beach turn around and see this monstrosity, the Omata "Tank Farm" directly across the road.
These ever so attractive vessels are full to overflowing with oil (and no small amount of gas) from the off shore rigs dotted around the coast of Taranaki. I don't know who granted planning permission for these or decided on the site, but while I understand the need for oil and gas I do not, and never will, understand the location.
About 500 metres north on this road is a large industrial site and factory owned by DowAgro Sciences. They changed their name from Ivon Watkins-Dow some years ago in the vain hope that the population of New Plymouth would forget that they had five chemical dumping sites "hidden" around the city, one of which was leeching chemicals on to the beach...Agent Orange being one of them.
Humans are awesome.
Its dose look scary and almost unnatural, I think the black & Withe make it also more dramatic, we did visit New Pymouthin 2013 and we went to the Goblin forest and found the Forgeten highway world

@kerenmcsweeney The Forgotten Highway is excellent - you can now do that trip on golf carts that have been converted to run on the old railway line...and yes, the Goblin Forest is very cool.

Very ominous, great processing. Hard to believe they are opposite the beach! What were they thinking?
March 31st, 2016
I agree, humans are awesome - not. What a shame these are opposite your beach! If I ignore the story, this is a great shot, like to clouds especially.

Nice shot, but very serious points, why put something so ugly next to something nice and natural... Insanity, ignorance and greed at its worst...
March 31st, 2016
Great shot and ominous tale... Next time I travel to south Sardinia I will post some images of mining plants right on some the white sand of some wonderful beaches...
March 31st, 2016
@domenicododaro The reason that I can think of that these big companies get away with it is by handing out some cash! And thank you.
@pasttheirprime Absolutely - it's all about the mighty dollar.
@dibzgreasley Thanks very much - the clouds were my favourite part as well, and luckily I have another 4 beaches to choose from.
@adayinmallacoota I don't think that they were thinking very much at all...
March 31st, 2016
this is a very awesome photo - but humans are greedy fu**wits
March 31st, 2016
@annied Thank you kindly lady, and yes, some of them are.
March 31st, 2016
@graemestevens of course I did not mean you or me hahahaha
March 31st, 2016
@annied Good lord no, I never thought that for a moment
March 31st, 2016
@graemestevens phew!! I thought maybe you had a conniption
March 31st, 2016
Fire your city councillors first. This is shocking.
March 31st, 2016
@yaorenliu Yes, yes it is.
March 31st, 2016
That is not good, time to don your face mask :)
March 31st, 2016
Well that explains it all! No wonder you want world domination. It's all those chemicals seeping into the environment around you :)
March 31st, 2016
Makes no sense at all..... greedy people!
March 31st, 2016
While this is a fab shot with an awesome moody sky, this is so disheartening. We really are a terrible species... Indeed we always hear of how wonderfully clean/green NZ is, so this is a shame to know... and the location - really!!
March 31st, 2016
humans totally suck...some of them anyway...brain dead oxygen thieves...and enviro-vandals...
awesome sky...sorry about your beach...
March 31st, 2016
such drama!
March 31st, 2016
my god this is at the beach, that beach you show us, I remember there was a power plant chimney of some such, but these shitty things, and beneath that fantastic sky. I feel your pain.....
March 31st, 2016
oh my that is a big contrast!
March 31st, 2016
@nicoleterheide It certainly is, I always thing they should try to hide it somehow
@jack4john The power station has been decommissioned but it still spends its days lurking behind the hills...
@vankrey I am a drama queen ;)
@maree_sanderson Thanks very much - and yes, some of them really do take up too much space
@kerosene It must have taken a few pay outs to get the land - a lot of NZ is still clean and green but then again, a lot of it most definitely isn't
@jocasta Absolutely agree
@888rachel That's also why I have 5 legs, 3 hands and a tail
@hermann Vengeance shall be mine!!
March 31st, 2016
What were they thinking, it's appalling and nothing is being done about it??? Shame on those greedy bastards in the government for doing this! Sorry for your beach and the poor sea creatures. Great pano though...subject awful.
March 31st, 2016
@juleshoogstraanderson Thanks very much - they should all be lined up and shot.
March 31st, 2016
Excellent image and interesting, but sad back story.
March 31st, 2016
makes you wonder doesn't it....
March 31st, 2016
NIMBY and the like. We are a pathetic race really. You made a good picture though
March 31st, 2016
@overalvandaan Thanks very much - and yes, someone else's back yard would be much better ;)
@alinz On a regular basis...
@pools82 Thank you very much :)
March 31st, 2016
It's all been said, but at least this plant has enabled you to take this stunning image... poor compensation really.
March 31st, 2016
@vignouse Thanks very much - it will have to do as I doubt there will be any more compensation forth coming
April 1st, 2016
disgusting, what the corporations think they can get away with.
Fabulous capture of the clouds.
April 1st, 2016
@bill_fe Thanks - the clouds were my favourite part as well
April 1st, 2016
Love that sky! Wonderful shot.
April 1st, 2016
