Cast Iron by grammyn

Cast Iron

My sister @ marilyn posted a picture of our grandmother's cooking fork for the April A challenge http://365project.org/marilyn/365/2012-04-17 and this is the cast iron skillet she used it in along with the misfit lid. I am still using it today to cook many of our meals. I have been using it for over 30years myself and I am not sure when she started using it.

I only use cast iron skillets to fry. They hold the heat bst and make best panjacks

@marilyn Thanks you for the comment and the permission. Of course you may link any of mine whenever you like without asking!

@peterdegraaff I use it mainly for frying but it is a good source of iron so I try to use it for some other dishes as well.

@grammyn well, it's old enough to be an antique and used to be your grandmothers.... I think it qualifies!!! really cool pic of it, I love the lid :-)

@kimfaria ;~} You are probably right . The lid is actually probably more interesting than the skillet isn't it?

People love their skillets after they get them all "broken in" and primed. Is it true you don't wash it? I don't have one...was not much of a cook. But now I wish I had kept Mom's. I do have a muffin pan with those corn cob shapes for cornbread, but have only made cornbread a few times....need to do that again soon!

@espyetta I used to not wash it until someone commented on how bad it looked. After That I learned you wash them but try not to scour them or they will louse the "seasoning" . They are a good source of iron so even loosing the seasoning is not such a bad thing it just means the food sticks more whjen you cook with it!

forgive my spelling errors. I really do know how to spell lose! It is typing that I am no good at! ;~} @espyetta

Don't believe you about the spelling/typing!!!!! Love the pan, the shot, the story and the comments!!!! So nice to have something like this and still be able to use it.

Nice photo of this cast iron skillet and the lid you use, Katy. I grew up with cast iron skillets on the stove all the time. We had to turn on the burners so they would dry and forgot about a couple of them over the years and got in trouble as they got ruined. My Mom still has a few of them left. Heavy but they sure cook up food great and last forever.

@darsphotos Thanks, Darlene. They are almost indestructible for sure.
