I have been noticing this tree on my morning walk for over a week now and finally decided to get a shot. I though those was mushrooms on the side of it but someone told me it is lichen. After a little research I discovered it is called bracket fungus which is in the mushroom family and is a disease of the heartwood of the tree.
I've always called them Turkey Tails because of the pattern on them. I also knew when I saw them that the tree was starting to die. Sad to have such interesting stuff growing you while your life is in its final stages. Good shot!
Hopefully it won't kill the tree. It looks like foot holds to climb up the tree. I like the contrast with the dark wood and trees behind it. It's no wonder we're all not full of fungus as hot and humid as it's been.
Beautiful shot of the fungus. I thought like lichen it was a symbiotic relationship. I didn’t know it was a disease, especially of the heartwood. Hope the tree stays strong.
