I am not sure which grandmother this belonged to but I know one of them used it in their grooming efforts. Thanks to @randystreat for the inspiration today
What a fabulous keepsake. Have you got photos of one of them with wavy hair? I am just looking at a photograph of my great grandmother from 1864 and she may well of used something similar.
What an interesting hair tool. (Is that what it is?) Wonder how it worked. Was it heated up to get the wavy effect? Wouldn't the whole thing (handle and all) get hot then? Any idea?
Great shot of this styling iron. I’m glad we have better tools now… ones that have built-in heat protectors for your hands rather than having to rely on gloves or “pot holders!”
Excellent shot! I wonder how our grandmothers had time to crimp their hair, after washing the family's clothes on a washboard and ironing them with a flatiron?
@30pics4jackiesdiamond wow thank you so much for all that enthusiasm @wakelys thank you Sue. I don’t think I have any photos that show their hair very well but I may keep on the lookout for it now @linnypinny oh nice of you to say Lin. @kjarn LOL I guess it does a little bit but I knew what it was so I don’t see it that way. @louannwarren can you imagine using this every day? @francoise I think I achieved that mostly in post processing but thank you @shutterbug49 thanks Debbie. They heated it on the stove and then used it to put waves in their hair. @madamelucy you are absolutely right on all of your assumptions I imagine they use some kind of a pot holder on the handle part to keep from burning their hands. @ludwigsdiana Thanks Diana and I am so grateful I don’t have to use it today!, @marilyn thanks bunches and you are so right I am grateful for that as well. @monikozi that’s really so very nice of you to see Monika. Thanks @sangwann I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. This was used to wave hair back in the days before electricity. @jacqbb it probably was if you’ve got it too hot! Thank you so much @randystreat LOL! It just seems like it would be a whole lot more work than it’s worth. Thanks again for the inspiration Kathy @eudora thanks Diane. I imagine just like everything else they made time for it somehow. @mcsiegle Thank you Mary. I feel the same way!
that thingie there existed only in the 1800's! god! your house is like a museum. the grand chap should build you a big show cabinet for all the artifacts you keep. aces!
@summerfield LOL! I have never looked at it that way before but I guess you’re right. The consequences of being a hoarder! I like your idea of building a cabinet. I might have to mention that to him.
@grammyn - most of the books i've reviewed over the last three years were about life in the 1800's and this solidified my perception of the 'hair iron' mentioned in them. it's amazing to see. ironic that i take my hair curler for granted with its handle that didn't even warm even when the curler itself is so hot. i have more respect for the 'help' in those times because they're the ones using it when they primped the mistresses of the house they worked in.
