Man and Machine by grammyn

Man and Machine

This big machine lifted up huge logs, and placed them into a machine which the operator remotely controlled to cut them up into perfect lengths for railroad ties. You can see the sawdust spraying out from it and I would say it took less than 10 seconds to cut through them. The yard where this was happening was huge with rows upon rows of stacked ties.
Great shot of man against nature! You have included lots of "stuff" going on in this shot... and I love the bright greens and the composition.

@marilyn Thanks. It was very impressive to see. I should have made a video and posted it!

It's sort of a "before and after" composition. . . with the green living tree and the logs. Lovely candid capture. Man and his machines, yes, you're so right. They make quick work of it. My husband would stand there forever and watch. Why do men like to watch these big machines?!!

@karenann Thanks,KarenAnn. I have to confess I loved sitting there and watching it too. It fascinates me how machinery can be manipulated to do such heavy work with such apparent ease! Good eye on the before and after observation. I hadn't caught that until you mentioned it!

Great shot. I have a man and machine shot for today too. I was debating whether to use it or not.

@debbim thanks so much Debbi. I almost posted a barn shot but declined to your greatness for that! I can't wait to see what you decide about your shot for today!
April 24th, 2012
@grammyn still deciding. My man vs machine was them digging up our old driveway. But not going to post that today since yours is great. Have a couple others. But trying to avoid more barns!!
April 24th, 2012
@debbim I am sure yours is great too and nothing wrong with shooting what you do well with the barns!
April 24th, 2012
@grammyn The sad thing is not all the leaves are on the trees and very few flowers. There is not a lot else to shoot !! But I do love them.
April 24th, 2012
very cool!) and the light is so perfect here!:)
April 24th, 2012
@debbim OK. Now it is time to stretch yourself! I challenge you to think outside the box and find something to shoot that you would not have considered last week. Animal , macro of dirt, bug, different POV of something! What ya got ,girl?!
April 24th, 2012
@nyusha Thanks, Anna. I guess I was lucky with the light. Truthfully I hadn't even thought of it for this shot.
April 24th, 2012
@grammyn I'll see what I can do!

I really like that the backdrop to this scene is a whole bunch of greenery :-) The irony is delicious.

Deb
I love the sawdust spraying out! Nice colors too :)
April 24th, 2012
@deburahiru Thanks, Deb! The sawdust is what initially caught my eye too!
April 24th, 2012
How many people would have been employed once to do the same work.
April 24th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Good question. How long would it have taken them to do it?
April 24th, 2012
Now this is a picture you don't see very often (a machine cutting railroad ties) and I'm familiar with wood. my son owns a saw mill..at one time he and his dad made log homes where the pieces were all numbered for easy assembly. these ready to assemble homes where shipped to Japan and another time they made hockey sticks believe it not.. I love the smell of fresh cut wood.
April 24th, 2012
@bruni You have a big investment in wood products it looks like. I'm with you the smell of fresh cut wood is very pleasant
April 24th, 2012
@grammyn Katy when I talk about my son and I refer to his dad i'ts because he is my X.. so as to money it's all theirs.
April 25th, 2012
