My husband spotted this water bird as we were driving by a pond. It is much smaller than the Great Blue Heron. I was not sure if this was a juvenile Great Blue Heron or not. It reminds me of the Yellow Crowned Night Heron, but I did not see a yellow crown on it.
I am behind in commenting, I was at a family reunion yesterday, so not time to comment on Friday or post and comment on Saturday. I will catch up on comments.
Thank you for viewing and commenting.
Update: I am re-titling this Yellow Crowned Heron as that is what it most closely resembles. It was less than half the size of the Great Blue Heron. Really a small fellow indeed.
Linda, A beautiful shot! Nicely done. I don't think it's a young Great Blue, but then I don't know what else it might be. In the same family for sure. We must have some real "birders" out there who will tell us?!
Fabulous capture! I love the colors! You are always in the right place at the right time to get your awesome duck and bird shots! Do you live on the water?
@sunraye Thank you for your comment. No, I do not live near the water, far from it. The area we live in is surrounded by hills and pasture land, whose grass is mostly brown right now. There is a little community smack dab in the middle of the countryside. We were on our way home from buying groceries and I decided to take a side road to pass by the pond, thinking to take a photo of people fishing. My husband spotted it, I could barely see it, so I turned the car around and drove as close as I dared, then walked towards him, taking photos all the way. I did get too close and he flew away, unfortunately, I was not prepared and did not get a flight shot.
Take you time.
