Snow Shelter by harbie

Snow Shelter

The week before we went snowshoeing, my husband and his Boy Scout Troop spent the weekend learning winter camping skills and survival. They built this snow shelter and the 4 boys slept in it with 2 boys in each of the 2 chambers. When we came back a week later, it was still there, and it looked liked someone else might have used it because there was new firewood next to it. We thought that was great. I crawled through the snow cave, but don't think I would like to sleep in it...too cold for me!! I like camping but am definitely a 3 season camper. Thank you for viewing!
What a great picture and story this tells. Love the shelter - though I can't picture myself voluntarily sleeping in there - I'm with you - too cold!

What fun your scouts have. My husbands troop would be content just being in a tent; I can't managing some of them doing this - but then we don't have as much snow either.

Can't imagine sleeping in a snow shelter but can't imagine living where there is so much snow! Good on your husband to volunteer to be a scout leader

Interesting, but it's not my kind of camping either. I like our motorhome with it's own kitchen and bathroom. Haha!

Wow, so they did a great job building the shelter, it would certainly be too cold for me also! Great seeing these shots!

I can't imagine sleeping in it either. I remember my son doing winter camping with the boy scouts when he was younger. My youngest son did some survival training while in Antarctica and built and slept in a snow shelter.

@fntngrma Did your son work in Antarctica? My son just started a mechanical engineering job for the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology where he will be in Antarctica from Oct-Jan working with geologists studying earthquakes. He is so excited...it is a dream come true for him. I was so interested that your son was in Antarctica! :D

@harbie Yes he did work in Antarctica for about 15 months as a firefighter for Raytheon Corporation. It was an awesome experience for him. I know the long dark winter was hard for him, not that he would ever admit it. He took some great pictures and has some harrowing and fascinating stories from his experiences. I know it will be an awesome experience for your son as well.
