Another hand-themed statue today. This is my favorite statue in Aachen, it is simply a very muscular/imposing statue of a blacksmith. Local history says that in April 1589 a Cardinal from nearby Maastrict, NL got it into his head that he wanted to take over Aachen, which at the time had no town defenses. The people of Aachen somehow caught a scout and learned of this plot beforehand, although they did not have any city militia and did not know how to organize their defenses. The local blacksmiths stepped up and rallied the people of the city and set up the plans that allowed them to successfully repel the invasion and thus the city of Aachen was saved by the backsmiths. Therefore this great statue of a blacksmith sits on the street near our apartment with a plaque roughly outlining that story.
I wanted to focus on his really powerful looking hand, therefore I got right under his arm, cranked opened the aperature for a narrow DOF and knealed down to increase the blurring of the background.

I'm impressed Steve at the detail you give about how your obtained your photo...that's really a help for anyone hoping to get the same results! This is an excellent image on any level, but so good for the theme.
The perspective just blows me away on this one!! and the colors are sooo beautiful. great angle to emphasize the hands.....works really well for the theme :)
yeah I would say the statue is around 6 feet tall, so life sized. I will probably include another angle on it later on to show the whole think a little better, its a great statue.
Thanks for the additional information you left for me, Steve, about the settings you use. I gave some thought to what I was doing with the apperture setting today, and saw noticable results with a few adjustments. It helps not to be in a hurry... Most appreciated!
