"I can't live with or without you". I could never understand some (British) people's hatred for the American spellings of certain words. As far as I am concerned: (a) in most cases the American spelling is nearer to the original English spelling than the current English version; (b) language is about communication, and this does not in any way hinder communication; (c) English dictionaries usually allow for both versions anyway; and (d) language evolves - get over it! I am sure that Bono had all this in mind when he wrote this, loosely disguised as an intense love song.
Or in the radio 1 tradition a 'tedious' link.
But, I am with you on the colo(u)r argument. I think technology will eventually eradicate spelling conventions there is a really interesting dictionary (wordnik) that aims to make an inclusive dictionary not exclusive . Erin Mckean does a great TEd talk on it. It is not really about how you spell colour but the same small mindedness.
