Boy in Cul de Sac by helenhall

Boy in Cul de Sac

It seems unreasonable to set a task that you haven't tried for yourself and so this is my own go at photography in the style of Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen.

As a student, I remember reading Colin Ward’s “The Child in the City” which ignited a fascination in the social history of housing and community. Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen uses her skills in portrait work and documentary photography to create charming, and sometimes amusing images that document changing townscapes and environments and the resilience of people.

She currently has works displayed in London in the new wing of the Tate Modern (The Switch House), as part of the Living Cities Exhibition.

I took myself off to one of the poorer wards in my home town and it was a real learning experience for me. Here you see a cul de sac - or a road cut off by the Charles Wells brewery which operates just feet away from the housing. Children were playing in the street on a Sunday afternoon and I was fascinated by the backdrop.

Would love to have waited for the young lad to have got a bit closer, but I was in the middle of the road and a car turned in behind me. Thought I had best move.

So, if I can have a go, then so can you - it isn't that difficult and I would love to see what you come up with. Not all her photos are of deprived inner city, so there are plenty of options.

Nicely framed. I like the balance in the lines from the factory, how how it frames this image. Nice one.

Most definitely perfect for the challenge, Helen! Great capture!

Great image. I am really struggling with this challenge. Cyprus seems so counter to the whole atmosphere represented in her work. All of our beach people have gone and our forest burned! I am improvising. :)

A
Nice! The symmetry of the parked cars works well, along with the wide range of shades of grey :)
