Just practising in the garden with focus and dof, and with getting the reds to come out right. I had to under expose by two whole stops to get the red not to burn out any. The resulting picture is pretty dark. No doubt with Lightroom something could be done about that but for now I'm happy with the experiment. Possibly better on black.
Constructive criticism very much appreciated - keen to learn more and improve. I bought a decent camera in February 2016 and joyed this wonderful space...
@shylaine3304 Hi. I'm new to this so I don't really have a pattern established yet of how I do things. This shot was taken with an oldish Nikon AF 50mm 1.4D prime lens that I inherited from a friend. I tried automatic focusing at first but couldn't get the whole flower in focus which is what I was aiming for. So I switched to manual and although I found it difficult to focus at such short range (my breathing movement alone was disturbing the focus) it seemed to give a better result after a few goes.
The best learning journey for me is trial and error until things become automatic. Im only just beginning and can identify with your description - but we often get good results even when they are not exactly what we were aiming for don't you think. I like that the leaf is defined in the foreground by virtue of it's perfect focus, but this doesn't detract attention from the soft rose. The darkness doesn't bother me at all.
