Most places have some folklore about a mythical creature that inhabits the area. The Pinelands of New Jersey is home to the infamous Jersey Devil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil There are at least two expeditions that try to locate him. One lead by university staff - they never have seen them - and the good-old boys in their pickups with kegs - they normally do see him.
Retired educator - taught mathematics in high school, went back to graduate school, worked in research labs, and finally went back and taught computer science...
