The monthly talk at the Buena Historical Society was given by my friend Mark. The title was "Our Forest Heritage: Pine-Belt Employments". He covered from 1610 to the 1940s next to Mark is a cedar hoop which was used as money back in the 18th and 19th century. Best viewed large

So different products or maybe toosl used in exchangeas instead of money. have to google to see when money came into the picture.
