New Kuban Russian Orthodox Church by hjbenson

New Kuban Russian Orthodox Church

With the snow and the deep blue sky, I drove to the New Kuban section of the township, figuring that the Russian Orthodox Church would be a good photo for today.

Nice and sharp in the clear light this afternoon. It was still a little cold for me to go out. Hope tomorrow is a little warmer.

Okay Harry, I have just had a good look through your back catalogue and here is your challenge, which I hope you will enjoy and maybe give you another style of capture to add to your arsenal.

I'd love it if you would capture some architectural detail in symmetry.

Here are some examples to give you an idea of what I am on about:
http://www.unframedworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/symmetry-photo-how-to10.jpg http://www.fotoblur.com/imgs/0/0/0/5/5/4/8/77268.jpg?v=0 http://cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000wYhgogk46pc/s/850/850/Architectural-Detail-B-W-3257.jpg http://static6.depositphotos.com/1056393/584/i/950/depositphotos_5847860-Architectural-detail-of-The-Benedictine-Abbey.jpg http://www.featurepics.com/FI/Thumb300/20111109/Architectural-Roof-Detail-2041948.jpg

Pay attention to your details though, this is harder to achieve than it appears! Symmetry requires perfect balance of the image, which in turn means moving around and paying attention to when you have achieved the perfect balance. Use the lines of the bricks or the angles of the two sides so that they really are mirrored.

The examples I gave above work because they are balanced well.

Here are a few that are close, but haven't quite got it right:
http://www.australianphotography.com/images/dmImage/SourceImage/DETAILS.jpg This one has the lamp detail perfect, but the building on the left is unbalanced!
http://flic.kr/p/byTSAf This one is just not balanced evenly. A few steps to the right would have done it perfectly! Pay attention to the roof beams, the one above the door should be centred and that would also have balanced the point of view of the chairs perfectly too.
http://flic.kr/p/6wmY8T With this one, the line across the top of the frame is tilted down to the right and the skylight is not centred.

It's really just a matter of going left or right to get the balance right for an exemplary capture of symmetry!

Hope that works for you, it looks like you have some interesting architecture close by to you.

Kind regards,
Alex
