And I'm not ashamed. Sorry, but I think point and shoot compact cameras are clumsy and hard to use. Canons just seem cheap to me (note that this photo was taken with a... Canon point and shoot). So i'm a SLR user, and a Nikon nut. And I really don't make apologies for it. I'm a photo snob and like big cameras. I think film is superior, too (another rant for another bad week of nursing school...)
F5, F4, D300, and D80. My babies.
I dunno, just seem like a lot of SLR hate on this site ("point and shoots are just as good" type of stuff). I understand this site is largely for amateurs, but not all of us just walk around taking pretty photos for fun all the time and think basic equipment is the bee knees. I'm not going to show up to a magazine shoot, or a wedding, with a point and shoot. I don't even really like a point and shoot in my purse, I cram the D80 in there instead (granted, the Canon point and shoot has been in there recently, the D80 is getting jealous... I might have a war going on over my purse camera spot soon). I guess I was blessed with getting a hand me down DSLR fairly soon after I got really into photography, so I have known nothing else (all 4 of my bodies are pre-owned actually...)
(Rough week at school, I'm rather grouchy at the moment... so I'm taking it out on EVERYONE.)
To end this, I'm also a PC. GASP!!!
Taken with a (LOL) Canon Powershot SX20 IS. Irony people, irony. I used what I supposedly strongly dislike to make a rant about what I supposedly strongly dislike. If only I edited it on a Mac... (that's one place I will NOT go... Canon, fine... point and shoot fine... Mac... hell no)
@rossco088 Ugh, I hate apple products. I wouldn't want to drive a car with only one pedal, so I don't want a computer with only one mouse button :P
Funny enough, I've actually be told that PS isn't made for PCs, and that my photos would look better edited on a Mac. Must be some magic voodoo loaded into a Mac that they can undo bad photography or something.
LOL. This is awesome. I definitely think my DSLR takes better pictures and is easier to use than my point and shoot but my point and shoot is easier to carry with me all the time. Also, I love my Canon Rebel but I got it because it is what I could afford. Totally a PC user too.
Great shot and sometimes ranting is good. Did it make you feel better? Hope tomorrow is better for you.
That's an interesting though Heidi - but think of all the accidents that could be prevented by people only having one pedal to worry about :)
I've heard the same thing re. PS - the big thing that made me switch was the quality of music recording software on the mac + the super stable operating platform.
I would rather still be using my Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II (purchased in 1971. ) But life moves one. That's a very nice picture, for a Canon :-) Use the right equipment for the job.
i'm a nikon girl myself! (even though my d90 is en route to nikon to be fixed...) but several of my shots are with my iphone or my p&s sony. for me, there is no comparison!! HOWEVER, i recently switched from PC to mac--and i love it. hope your day gets better! (:
I enjoy a good rant, yours was nice. I could spark off a tangential one about how the correct number of pedals in a car is three and definitely not two... but I digress! The most amusing thing with "oh but macs are designed for creative content producer" types is that macs don't even use different hardware to PCs anymore...
@eyebrows I'm a manual driver myself, so I get the 3 pedal thing :)
I'm glad no one has gotten butthurt and left mean comments. Just some satirical ranting (I mean, come on, I took the photo with a Canon point and shoot! haha). All in good fun...
great rant. love it. Nikon rules!! i will follow you. I was with you right up until PC. I switched to a MacBook a year ago and will never go back. no comparison. You are forgiven though :) and I'm jealous of your assortment of cameras.
well, i can forgive you for the professional on the amateur site, but the pc user! never! lol ... hey, keep using the pc. high #'s of pc users keeps the hackers going there instead of to the macs. ;-p ... and i do like my nikon ... someday, maybe i'll upgrade to a nicer nikon, but since i am one of those who takes pix for fun, i can't justify the cost just now. hope all is better.
LOL, I'm a Mac girl who uses a Canon P&S. To each her own! ;-) I've actually thought about upgrading to a DSLR, but at this point, its not a practical option for me.
@pinktornado39 I've never been hacked, nor had a virus, so I am unfamiliar with these PC stereotypes you throw at me :p However, the Apple computers I had use by force of scary high school teachers did crash and lose about 5 or 6 papers in my course of public education :p
All in good fun :) I'm just waiting for someone to show up and take my rant uber seriously so I can have some lulz. Sure beats doing a case study on a elderly lady with atrophic vaginitis. (Nursing school is wonderful... leads to semi-trolling of photo diary sites...)
lol ... i would take your rant uber seriously, but i just can't seem to summon the energy mostly because my hubby is the die hard mac addict and i just follow along. as long as he's my personal i.t. specialist i don't care what computer i use - i break it & he fixes it. . =;-p ... so what made you go to nursing school?
instead of the cannon P&S could you have used a really long shutter speed... like 2 secs...
in a dark room hit the shutter.. pick up the camera really fast and aim it... paint the scene with a quick flash from an off camera flash... set the camera back down for the other 1/2 of the exposure... a canon could do it :)
@pinktornado39 Haha, there's nothing to take seriously anyway, haha. I was just being grouchy, and I took the whole photo with a Canon p+s, haha. I have a degree in microbiology, but it's hard to get jobs (good jobs...) with that, so I am back for nursing. Then I can combine the two things, and do like infection control nursing. Just a nice and secure job field. No way in the world would I do photography full time, it would suck all of the fun out of it quickly (as it did when I worked for a car magazine). Just nice side thing for money, and my fun lil' hobby where I wander around with toy film cameras, and annoy all my friends by going "stop, I must take a photo!!"
@icywarm Too much effort, point and shoot executed it much faster :p But I could have chosen my Kodak p+s, but I tend to lose that in the shuffle. Or or or, I could've used my NIKON p+s, but I haven't turned it on in several years...
Ok, I'll admit it... I should've just used the Holga, and by the time I got the film processed, I would've been over my ranting mood :P
@hmgphotos - well, i'm never grouchy myself. btw, i have a bridge over a nice river in AZ for sale. lol. hang in there. jobs are tough all over, but i hear nursing is a wide open field with the demand very high. i have benefited from some wonderful nurses. glad you could get things off your chest. now, if you'll excuse me, i have to go look up "atrophic vaginitis" ...
@sudweeks I wish all my cameras were like the F5 :( Just none of the rest compare. I'm thinking of selling the F4 actually, as I don't really like it (spoiled by the F5), but can't decide if I just want to set it on a shelf, or if I want the few hundred bucks I'd get for it. I'm kind of a hoarder of old film cameras so it's a hard decision.
I hear you there. I have an old Canon A1 film camera with 4 lenses. It's the camera I learned to shoot on, but I never use it. The camera and all the lenses might bring in $300, but I know I'd really miss it.
You should pick up a D3 or D700. My D3 cured me of my desire to shoot with my F5. I'm still hanging on to the F5, I just haven't shot with it much since I picked up my D3.
@sudweeks I wish I could afford a D3 or D700 :( Hell, I wish I could even afford a D7000 so I could sell off the D80. Maybe once I'm out of school I can finally splurge on very nice stuff :) The D300 luckily is still a good camera, I just love the beefiness of the F5
Ha ha that's one good rant and made it on PP! :-)
Preferences... just a matter of preferences. I have mine own and as long as I'm havin' a nice time, then I'm good. :-)
@singer Haha, I'm thinking of selling the F4... Just don't like the feel and controls of it, especially since I am so use to the F5. But it's a hard decision to make, as I tend to hoard up film cameras.
I bought my first DSLR last year, and frankly it is way better than any P&S I have ever used - so agree with you on that point.
Now my SLR is a Cannon - not a Nikon (they felt too clunky in my hand) - so i'll have to disagree with you on that point.
As to the PC comment.... I'm sorry to hear it, you really should come over to the dark side :)
Funny enough, I've actually be told that PS isn't made for PCs, and that my photos would look better edited on a Mac. Must be some magic voodoo loaded into a Mac that they can undo bad photography or something.

P.S. I saw in a few posts up you mentioned you have a degree in Microbiology. My Dad's a retired Microbiologist! :)
As for operating systems... I really like Ubuntu.
You should pick up a D3 or D700. My D3 cured me of my desire to shoot with my F5. I'm still hanging on to the F5, I just haven't shot with it much since I picked up my D3.
p.s. That's a pretty sweet f/2.8, 17-55mm lens you got thar *drools*.
;-)

So envious, would love to have each one of those, they are pretty, aren't they? :)
Didn't now you have an F5. I've been wanting an F6.
