I think this flock of robins that flew into my yard today is regretting their decision to fly north so early. It's very cold and we have tons of snow on the ground. But, I was glad to see them.
Notice the icicle in the bottom right corner shot. The robins were high in a tree, so I was looking through icicles to photograph them.
I could be wrong, but I do think in recent years at least there are some robins that stay all or most of the winter. When I lived 60 minutes south of where I am now, I NEVER saw a robin till spring. In recent years I have seen them periodically throughout the winter...especially when it is mild.
That said what a beautiful collection of shots! Love the golden light!
I've always thought of them as signs of spring, but a few years ago, I saw a flock of them and did some asking around. It seems that are are a few males that remain behind during the winter.
@mittens Thanks so much for the FAV! @luvmynynix We would see one occasionally in IL when it was mild in the winter, but it was only 20 degrees today! We've had a terribly cold winter. I was totally shocked to see them today. @timandelke There were at least 20 of them flying around my trees today and it has been very cold all winter.
. @kathysview Thanks! We don't have a bird feeder, but sometimes it takes the birds a few weeks to make sure it's safe for them to visit. @sweeps Thanks! @olivetreeann Thanks! Maybe they came north! LOL! @digitalrn I certainly hope so! Looks like some of the trees are budding in the pictures, too. Unfortunately, it didn't feel like spring today. @linnypinny Thanks!
@ceilidh I don't think I have ever seen them in a flock either. I don't know that I've ever seen a robin when there a foot of snow on the ground and it's 20 degrees.
