For Six Word Story.
Dec. 30, 1989, donned cold and dreary and covered in a thick layer of ice. I remember it vividly. My dad complaining that he had to wear dress shoes instead of his boots. Sliding past the entrance to the church parking lot. Local people stranded on their mountains and not able to get to town. One of my husband's friends literally looking green, very sick with stomach flu. And the day went downhill from there. That evening, pea soup fog set in, and we were driving on the interstate at 30 miles an hour. Pittsburgh airport cancelled flights in and out. We couldn't find the paperwork we needed to fly out any way, but my husband's friend found it at his parents' house back where we started from. We drove hours through the heavy fog again back to where we started from, got the paperwork and headed another 3 hours over the mountain and through the fog to Dullis Airport for a flight leaving the next morning. When we reached the highest elevation, my husband had to open his door to look for the yellow lines on the road because he could barely see the front of our car (couldn't see the road at all). Finally we headed down and the fog cleared, only to drive into Winchester, VA, past a police officer who saw the lights of our radar detector and followed us (we forgot it was even on given the weather). I yanked it down because radar detectors are illegal in Virginia. My husband stalled our car because he was just learning to drive a stick shift and the police officer hit his lights for us to pull over. We pull over and we explain that the car is new (sticker was still in the window, even though we had had it a week or so). He saw my husband's military jacket and directed us to where we could get coffee at 3 a.m. and told us how to get to the airport. No ticket. We arrive at the airport a few hours later and settle in to wait for our early flight, exhausted having not slept in two days. We napped on the plane and they dumped us out onto the tarmac in 80-degree, mid-day sunshine to wait to go through customs which was very busy with New Year's Eve travelers. By the time we got to out hotel and got settled in, it was almost time to head out to dinner and New Year's Eve festivities where we drank fresh fruit punch and listened to island music while waiting on 1990 to arrive.....
How do I remember all this so vividly? It was one of the best (and worst days in many ways) of my life....our wedding day.
So, tonight we drove back to Winchester, VA, walked through the old historic town and ate at a French restaurant to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. It was a clear night, chilly but not freezing cold, and far less stressful. And the food was fabulous!
Awww congratulations! My 25th on the 6th Jan. not quite that dramatic - just drizzly on our wedding day. Though now I'm worrying that our guests won't be able to get to our party if it snows and I wonder why my mum didn't have a nervous breakdown worrying about a winter wedding.
That is quite some story Lisa - congratulations on your wedding anniversary and on this photo which I like enough to give it a Fav. A HNY to both of you and thanks for all your comments and Favs this last year.
@amandal@brigette@ceilidh@overalvandaan@willowdragon@wenbow@pdulis@ltodd@joemuli@tonygig@quietpurplehaze@tjchapa@northy@swilde@terryliv@vega Thanks! Happy New Year! @golder365mjsmith@vignouse Thanks so much for the FAV! Happy New Year! @danette You just never know what you are going to encounter in the mountains, very unpredictable weather, especially in the winter. But, as bad as our wedding day was, our first anniversary was worse (my husband deployed to the 1st Gulf War on our 1st anniversary)...but, it's all uphill from there! LOL! @judithg Hahaha! Definitely. With the wedding just a week after Christmas, it was very stressful. but if we wanted my husband's friends to participate before the Army scattered them all over the place, we had to do it then. Hope your party goes off without a hitch!
I knew it, I knew it had to be your wedding day!! Well, no wonder you've had such a good run- to start out with that adversity (weather wise and the best made plans...wise) you were bound for success! Happy Anniversary to both of you and may the Lord bless you with many many more!! Sounds like this year's celebrations was a "delicious" walk down memory lane instead of the heavy fog you started out in.
@randystreat@joansmor@creativeaddict Thanks! @sbolden Thanks so much for the FAV! @olivetreeann Thanks. It was definitely more fun than the first trip! LOL! Curse, after our first anniversary when my husband deployed to Desert Storm on our actual anniversary, it's all up hill from there!
