In downtown Romney, WV, there is a Civil War Museum. The building dates back to 1797. Control of Romney, (West) Virginia, changed hands 7 times. These artifacts were found at a Union redoubt on a nearby mountain where Union troops fought a major engagement against McNeil's Rangers, a famous Confederate force from the area that my husband grew up learning about. West Virginia has the distinction of being created during the Civil War on June 20, 1863, when part of Virginia decided not to leave the United States to become a part of the Confederate States.
