One of the galleries at the MIT Museum had a bunch of simple machines that students have made over the years, including this self-oiling machine. The arm continually circled around the main gears, dipping into the tray of oil below and dumping the oil when it was above it. It was very cool.
The practical side of me is thinking, "So it oils itself. Does it do anything other than that? If not I don't think I'd want to sacrifice the space for it!" Good shot.
@olivetreeann I thought the same thing. They had all kinds of strange little machines that mostly just moved something around, didn't do anything practical at all.
