This mansion in Newport, RI, is known as the Marble House, was built by the Vanderbilts in the early 1890s for about $11 million as a summer cottage. It's mostly made of marble (500,000 cubic feet of marble) and has a giant room done in gold leaf. Some of the rooms were pretty, but most were just gaudy. Not my style, that's for sure.
Just filling in some pics I missed while moving.
@homeschoolmom Thanks for that Lisa. Just had a look and it wasn't Marble House I was reading about but the even larger Vanderbuilt "cottage" at Newport, The Breakers and the largest of them all, George Vanderbuilt's "Biltmore" in Nth Carolina. In case you are interested, the book is "At Home" by Bill Bryson, who just happens to be one of my favourite authors.
@terryliv The Biltmore is just a couple of hours from where we live now in NC. I have got to go see that in the spring. They say it is fabulous. The Breakers was closed for renovations to the exterior when we were there. I'll have to check out that book before we go to the Biltmore.

@juliedduncan The room that was in gold leaf was around 2500 sq feet, bigger than most houses. This place is huge.
