Does anyone still use molasses?

I'm not sure I've ever bought molasses or used it. But sorghum is a major crop in our area. I took these pictures just down the street from our subdivision. I had to Google sorghum to make sure I had the right plant. When it was first growing, it looked a lot like corn.
Hello, old fashioned cook here. I use molasses and just used some this past weekend to make a raspberry bread. Love it. But have never had Sorghum molasses.

Well I must say, yes, we still use molasses. We use it to make shoo-fly pie, molasses sugar cookies, etc. A big Pa Dutch treat

My Mom used sorghum molasses (made great cookies)! I had no idea what the plant looked like (always had it in my mind, looking like sugar cane). These photos are so pretty--they make a great collage!

I love the way you've done this photo! My family uses regular molasses, but I'm not familiar with sorghum molasses. I wonder what the difference is...

@joansmor @swilde Apparently, real molasses is made from sorghum, but most of the stuff you buy in the store is made from corn syrup (kind of like pancake syrup, most of it isn't made from maple sap either).
@digitalrn Yes, the Amish still us it a lot, and they use the real stuff, not the fake stuff you buy in the grocery store. I've heard of shoo-fly pie, but have never eaten it. I bet it's yummy.
@paulam Thanks!

@tinapeterson Kind of like the difference between the pancake syrup you buy in the store and real maple syrup. I believe that real molasses is made from sorghum and the stuff you get in the store is mostly made from corn syrup.

I use Grandma's molasses which is a unsuphured molasses and hey I live in Maine I buy the real stuff when it comes to Maple syrup. LOL but I didn't know that about molasses but did about maple syrup.

I use it to make Irish Treacle (molasses) Soda Bread, delicious. If you'd like the recipe I'll pass it on to you.

@homeschoolmom Interesting, thanks for the education :)

@joansmor I don't even know where you would go to buy real molasses any more. Probably hard to find. Kind of like how you have to live in New England to get good maple syrup! LOL!

@homeschoolmom Northern molasses is not made with sorghum it the result of sugar processing and is usually from the second "cooking." I love dipping a PB sandwich in some on the side.

Great shot, never seen molasses plants before, very nice.

@joansmor Really? Guess that's because Sorghum won't grow up north, too cold. Kinda like why they don't tap maple trees in the south. It's too warm all the sap would run out and kill the tree!

@skippysue I had to Google them to make sure that's what they were. I had never seen them before either. They like like small, pointy corn stalks.

@digitalrn oh rick, shoo fly pie. I haven't had any in years. My grandma used to make it. It was one of my favorites. You just can't get the right molasses in California.

@tigerdreamer I bet you could buy it online!
