I think this is a mockingbird, but I can't seem to catch it outside the tree to get a good look at it. As it was, I stepped outside wearing only my socks to get this picture. It was worth wet socks.
It's a tough angle to identify by, but here's two things you can be on the look out for to make a positive identification. 1) Does it sing like a cardinal, sing like a bluejay, sing like a robin or any other combination of songs, switching almost effortlessly? That's a mocking bird! 2) When it flies, do you see two large white patches under its wings and white and black markings on its tail? If so, it's a mocking bird. The beak and coloring does match the pictures in my bird books, so I think it probably is.
@digitalrn@graemestevens@swilde Thanks! @olivetreeann All the sites I looked at at the call, but I don't know that I've ever heard it. I've seen it a few times in this same tree, but other then that we don't seem to have too many birds in our backyard here. It's kind of odd given the giant trees behind our house.
@terryliv@terryliv@lynnilou@ceilidh Thanks! @joansmor I remember hearing a mockingbird when we lived in IL and in NH, but the only birds I have heard here are geese flying over. The lack of yard birds here is kind of strange. This is the only bird we've seen in our yard.
@joansmor Oh, I never thought of that. Now I have something to look forward to this winter! LOL! I just didn't expect there to be so few birds. It's not as hot as IL was in the summer and there are way more trees here than in IL, so I never expected that.
