Calvario

"Calvario"
Marcelo Nepumoceno (1870-1923), 1890
Polychrome Softwood
Pasion Y Gloria: An Exhibition of Filipino Lenten Images From 17th Century to Present
Manila Cathedral, Intramuros Manila

At a time when ivory, diamonds, gold and hardwood were de rigueuer for the finest calvarios, Marcelo Nepumoceno utilized lightwood. Rather than call attention to prized materials, his oeuvre attracts the viewer with the correct anatomic proportions of the Academic Style.

A resigned Mary Magdalene is cast beneath her dead Lord's cross. Avant-garde composition, the unusual absence of the Mater Dolorosa and San Juan accentuates Mary Magdalene's desolation.

The piece is signed and dated at the back.
