The remains

This is the car park in the city centre where a fire destroyed 1400 cars on New Year's Eve.

The fire started in one car and spread rapidly, all the fuel tanks and tyres started to explode so the nearby arena, hotels and apartments had to be evacuated.

Thankfully there were no injuries but I feel very sorry for everyone whose car was parked here. The hotels and the arena seem to be open today so it's business as usual for them.

No need to comment, this is just to record the event.
I read about this -- and the charred building says so much. So sorry for what happened, so glad nobody is hurt.

What a tribute to the very sad story that made national news. It was amazing, in fact, that no one was injured.

Great documentary shot, Christine, I was wondering if you would get down here to get a shot of all the destruction. I was following the story on New Year's Eve on line, the radio and TV. I have seen a few cars catch fire in the past and know just how fiercely they burn and did think the firemen would have problems trying to stop this with them so tightly packed in.
I know a couple of people who had cars in there.

@markp thanks Mark. Apparently the decision to let the cars burn was taken quite early on. It would have been more dangerous to tackle the fire, with melting fuel tanks and exploding tyres - especially as there were no people in the building.
