We were lucky to get places on the guided tour at St Magnus Cathedral while we were in Orkney. The behind-the-scenes tour took us via a narrow stone spiral staircase to the upper levels, into the bell tower and out on the roof. The balcony where I stood to take this photo has only enough space for 2 people so we had to take turns to see the view.
I had to balance the camera on the railing of the balcony to keep it steady, I was feeling a bit wobbly looking down from here!
Some parts of the building are more than 850 years old and require constant monitoring and maintenance, which I was glad to hear, although I wasn't so keen when the guide pointed out all the subsidence cracks in the stonework!
When we returned safely to the ground floor it was incredible to look up and see how high we'd been.
Thanks for all your comments and favs, really appreciate them. Hoping to catch up now we're home from holiday.
@ellida thanks Graham :) I'd definitely recommend the tour, it's so interesting. There are just 6 places on the tour and with only 4 tours a week it's a good idea to book in advance. Orkney is wonderful, so much to see and do!
