A couple of years ago, I taught myself to knit by watching videos on YouTube. I started a scarf, made lots of newborn hats, started another scarf, made some more hats, started a blanket, unraveled the blanket, and started another scarf. So far, I have completed....lots of newborn hats.
I was working on one of my many scarves a few months ago when my boy, Diego, asked me who it was for. I said that I didn't know, I was just trying to finish something for once. He eagerly asked, "Can it be for me??"
.....it was fluffy and very pink. I thought he was joking because he is, very much, all boy. Well, the kind of boy who will sing a sweet serenade to his baby sister and clothesline his younger brother at the same time. So, while I know that he does have a soft side, I also know that, as he grows older, the nostalgia of having something his mama made will be much more appreciated if it has a bit more of a masculine touch to it.
I asked what colors he would like and he answered, "Red and blue."
Next week is his birthday. I have been knitting away and have finished his scarf. ( I will now pause for applause.....)
I felt so accomplished that I decided to make him a hat to match. I have no clue when it comes to sizing so I just guessed. But from what I can tell, it IS going to be thick. Very, VERY thick.
Maybe that "Made by Mama" nostalgia isn't such a bad thing after all....
