A new little friend has been visiting me. This is a Dark-eyed Junco. From what I read, they like to hang around on forest floors of the western mountains (I'm close but not in) and then scurry off to other parts of North America for the winter, which explains why they are hanging with me.... except, it has barely even touched on winter here. You make a few frozen bubbles and suddenly it's the arctic. ;) It's actually been around 60° each afternoon so, maybe they are just confused as to their location. Either way, they are super cute little sparrows and I don't generally find them at the feeders, but down below, foraging around for food. I had quite an in depth conversation with one the other morning, before sunrise. The sky was just barely starting to glow and there he was, clicking away, about 5 feet from me. I clicked back and he told me all about it.
This is a really nice shot of him.
We get a lot of these around here in the winter too, although I haven't noticed mine having so much of that pretty buff colour on the sides. They are pretty to see flying with the flashes of white as they lift their wings.
