Easter Rising by jack4john

Easter Rising

Here in Ireland we are commemorating the Easter Rising which took place on Easter Monday 1916.The first act of the rising was the capture of the GPO on the left here and the raising of the Tri-color. It is generally considered to be the birth of modern Ireland. There are plenty of websites which will explain the background and events of the time better than I can. It is with the peace process in Northern Ireland and a new era of friendly relations with the UK, that our shared history can be examined without giving rise to sectarian strife,
It is no utopia here, we have the same problems as any other democratic society but we try to be good neighbors , The link is to a piece of music that is used in information adverts about events related to the commemoration. the lyric is in Irish but I think it is quite haunting ( in a good way) The group are called The Gloaming and the piece Samhradh Samhradh ( Summer Summer) , Thanks for taking the time , and a happy Easter to you all...by the way Easter 1916 was a month later than this year... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP0wcwCQbOs

Didn't really follow the history of Ireland anywhere in my education so really interested to find out. This was 100 years ago! Will listen to the music!

There can't be any more famous Post Offices than this. Congratulations on your anniversary. I spent several years working in Dublin and I know O'Connell Street well, so I wonder what has happened to that big pointy monument, the Spire, which should be behind Jim Larkin. The Spire replaced Nelson's Column, blown up by republicans in the Sixties (why did they wait 40 years?). So I am hoping this excellent photo is the result of a bit of Photoshopping, rather than explosives! I think we are all happy that the days of explosives are over.

I wondered would anybody notice the spire was gone, and figured you might be the one.It looked like it was a pole holding up big Jim. It was a lost opportunity to create something special there instead we got a needle, just what a city that has a drug problem needed. Ya cloned out guilty as charged...

Thanks for sharing the link to the The Gloaming and the piece Samhradh Samhradh, it is indeed haunting and quite mesmerising to listen to. I would love to know the interpretation to this piece, it is quite beautiful.

Fantastic capture, and in this day and age of intolerance it makes for an intriguing post!
