As part of my theme of 'favourite places in Houston', this is the River Oaks Movie Theatre, where I have spent many a happy hour. It's within walking distance of home, which we love. The Epicure Cafe next door is also a great wee place for a meal before the film. The most recent film I saw there was 'Belle', a super film, which I see is still showing!
I was thinking the same thing as Linda — that the image has a vintage feel. The b&w contributes to that but I think it's also that theater sign and entrance. Not many look like that anymore. This could be tagged for the fortnight b&w architectural challenge. (bw-fn-4)
Thanks for the comment shared on my Dragonfly image. I've only seen a couple of live dragonflies and they're never even thinking about sitting still.
@lynnilou@bkbinthecity@happysnap@craftymeg@denisefuller@pixiemac Thanks folks, this cinema seemingly dates back to the 1930s, although it is now set amongst very modern shops. For information, the website says ... 'Located in the upscale River Oaks Shopping Center at the corner of West Gray and Shepherd, the River Oaks is one of Houston's last true movie palaces, having kept its beautifully ornate Art Deco interior since it opened its doors in November, 1939, with the film Bachelor Mother starring David Niven and Ginger Rogers.' I have to say that the interior is in serious need of some TLC today, but I just hope they do not tear it down instead of doing some work to it. There are so few places in Houston with a bit of history and character.
Does have a vintage feel to it. Showed it to my husband and his reply was 'that is picturesque by Houston's standards!' As you say let's hope they carry out the necessary renovations in order to save the place for future generations.
This seems contradictory to my mental image when I think the word "Houston" - more like I remember my small town in the 1960's - of course, the model of those cars sure doesn't fit that. Good choice for b&w - does add to times gone by feeling.
