A friend and I went for a walk yesterday as it was such a beautiful day. This is taken in a town called St. Germain-en-Laye, which is about 12 miles west of Paris. Amongst other things, it is famous for this 1.5 mile long stone terrace built by André Le Nôtre in the 17th Century. The terrace provides a view over the valley of the Seine and, in the distance, Paris. Here, in particular you can see the high rise buildings in the business district of Paris, La Défense. I think my friend is standing right in front of the tip of the Eiffel tower, which you can also see on a clear day!
During the French Revolution, the name of this town was changed, along with many other places whose names held connotations of religion or royalty, to Montagne-du-Bon-Air (Mountain of Good Air).
In 1688 James II of England exiled himself to St Germain-en-Laye due to religious conflict at home.
@taffy Yes, I must remember how lucky I am. It's the third time we've lived in this area though, so we do tend to be a little blasé. I do appreciate it though. However, Chicago is high on the list of places I want to visit!!!
@jamibann Let me know, of course, if you even do get to come to Chicago. I love showing the city off to visitors! Or at least giving you a list of suggestions for visiting.
@taffy I certainly will! Our former neighbours from Houston are retiring there this month, and we have promised to come out and visit them, so who knows?!
