We're back from a 24-hour trip to Edinburgh; Scotland's capital city and a fantastic place where the castle dominates the sky line. This is the view from Princes Street, one of the main shopping streets in the city.
The history of the castle is long and interesting: The Scots and English struggled for control of it during the Wars of Independence. In 1314 it was recaptured from the English in a daring night raid led by Thomas Randolph, nephew of King Robert the Bruce.
It has sheltered many Scottish monarchs; including Mary Queen of Scots, who gave birth to James VI in 1566. Her great-great-great grandson - Bonnie Prince Charlie - captured Edinburgh but was unable to take the castle during the 1745-6 Jacobite Rising.
Today it is a national icon and attracts thousands of tourists daily.
