Bon Accord

This is Aberdeen's Coat of Arms, sculpted on the ancient Mercat Cross - built in 1686 by John Montgomery, a native architect. I didn't get a pleasing image of the entire structure so decided to focus on some of the detail. I see one of the lions has lost his leg.
I *love* architectural detail! It's such a strong statement about the ability of the artists who worked on the churches and other buildings! What sort of structure is this where you found the image? How long does it take you to travel between Aberdeen and Paris? AND...is Aberdeen where you are from? You must love returning to Scotland!

@Weezilou So many questions Louise ... I had to come back and answer them! I didn't get a decent image of the structure itself, as it is currently surrounded by various unsightly things ... dustbins, scaffolding, etc. This should give you an idea of the actual structure though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlegate,_Aberdeen I fly over to Aberdeen from Paris - flight is just over an hour and there is a one-hour time difference. We lived in Aberdeen for many years before we left to go on expatriation to Indonesia, then we returned for a four year period when our daughter was 9 months old. Our son was born there. We then left for Argentina and have never lived in Aberdeen since. It holds many wonderful memories for us though, and it was fun being there for a couple of days as a 'tourist'. I usually head straight up to Ballater/Braemar, which is where we have our home and where my father lives (45-60 miles inland).

nice detail, but those lions don't look happy, even the one with both legs!

Great details. It looks amazing and to think how old it is, it has weathered well!

@pusspup You're right - they both look thoroughly miserable. ;-)

@jamibann What an amazing and fascinating background you have Issi! I'm so glad you wrote all that as I had had no concept of your travels in life! When I encountered you, I thought perhaps you'd "married a foreigner who took you off to Houston", and then, lo-and-behold, how-cool-is-that!, he took yo to Paris to live! And to think that was only just part of the story! Fascinating!

@Weezilou And there's more Louise ... He also took me to live in Nigeria, Burma, and Pau in the southwest of France! I think he's taking me back home to Scotland on our next move though ... whenever that might be!

@jamibann While my family moved a great deal (Dad was a consulting engineer in those early years) it was always in the states...and Territory of Hawaii, as it was know back then! You clearly have an affinity for the people of this world , and it's easy to see why you enjoy the connections on this site!

Great texture and fearsome lions, even with a leg missing.

@jamibann I'm enjoying this thread and getting a peek into your history of living-the-world life! This image has so many details that the more you look the more you wonder, how did that foot get lost, why are they baring their teeth, what is that at the bottom, etc.
