Defeated! by jamibann

Defeated!

I went out yesterday morning on a cycle run with the club and had a puncture, so swopped out the inner tube there and then, but decided I needed to replace the tyre once I got home as it was looking pretty worn and rubbed in places. Frustratingly, I was defeated getting the final few inches of tyre over the wheel rim and had to get my husband to do it when he got home (he did say it was very tough). So frustrating - I should have been able to do this! I've done it before with an old tyre, but I guess the new one was just that much less flexible and harder rubber. I wondered about warming it a bit before putting it on. Anybody got any tips? It got me today's selfie though. Do excuse the mess in the garage, I didn't move anything for the photo!
Oh my, Issi. I hate rear tire changes. For me a puncture is always a reason to toss the bike into a dig and abandon it. Have always trouble on mounting the tyre and am glad when hubby does it. We put one side in first, then ease the partially inflated tube into the tire and put the other side on. But probably you did it this way, and the new rubber was just not flexible enough.
Well you made a great diary picture out of it. Cycling in february is unusual.

Were you using tyre levers? But many congrats on cycling in Feb, in Paris and with a club! I'm a fair weather cyclist and love my electric assist bike. Your garage has visible floor space! That's tidy to me. Great story to our photo.

@mona65 Yep, I did it just as you've described, but could NOT get the last few inches! I think the extra difficulty was just that the tyre was new and less flexible. It's all good experience though. Until 18 months ago, I had never changed a tyre or an inner tube! @pennystot I tried with tyre levers and without! I've been lucky to cycle over the winter - I haven't missed many of my Wednesday outings so far. Although, 2 weeks ago it was -5, and my feet were absolutely frozen and my limbs wouldn't work properly. Not a pleasure, I have to say! I prefer summer cycling! :-)

A great photo of you doing your stuff. I know what you mean about having to give in and ask for help! You do look very fit by the way!

Sorry about the tire! Great selfie, your garage looks fine to me.

A great selfie Issi, I always hated changing tyres or inatubes of any description, thankfully I don't have to worry about it anymore!

Oh, my! I'm not a cyclist so I'm not familiar with the problems with rear tire changes but I do understand that frustrated and defeated feeling when you try SO HARD and in so many different ways to do something and it just doesn't work! I suppose the contrast makes feelings of accomplishment so much sweeter when our efforts ARE successful. Nice selfie, Issi! I agree with Kate . . . your garage doesn't look messy to me. :-)

You look great, even in a messy (?) garage.

Kudos to you for attempting this. Great selfie of a cyclist behind the scenes!

Happy cycling!

Nice selfie! I have not done it in a number of years but I always had good success using 3 tire levers.

You look like a pro even if you couldn't get that last bit of tire ready. I like your selfie.

@busylady Thanks Judith! Fit, but not strong enough to do that tyre! ;-)

A wonderful selfie, and I don't find the garage particularly messy (but then I am quite a messy person myself). Take comfort in the fact that your husband found it tough, too.
