Another from Monday's trip to Père Lachaise Cemetery. Edith Piaf's grave - my favourite French singer. But, oh, she had such a sad life. Born in Belleville in the suburbs of Paris, she was abandoned by her mother and brought up by her grandmother in a bordello in Normandy. When she was 14 she started singing in the streets of Paris. At 17 she gave birth to a baby girl, Marcelle, who died at the age of 2 from meningitis and neglect. Piaf married twice, but only after the love of her life, Marcel Cerdan died in a plane crash. She also spent much of her life battling alcoholism and drug addiction. She died in Neuilly sur Seine. Such a tragic life and yet so much success. My favourite of all songs was 'Hymne à l'amour'. Gives me goose pimples to listen to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvHph2zrMrA
Oh gosh, you've got me singing "Non, rien de rien. Je ne regrette rien." Of course that's all I know so it's going around like a broken record in my head. I didn't know she sang the song you cited. I've only heard it in English. It is beautiful.
What a sad story... I remember a poem, cut from a newspaper, that I carried for years... The repetitive part was, "Oh God, forgive me when I whine, I have --, the world is mine". Thus here, a beautiful soul in need of more nurturing...
