Château de St-Germain-en-Laye by jamibann

Château de St-Germain-en-Laye

I had to pop up to St Germain yesterday for a physio appointment. It's such a lovely town, 19 km west of Paris. This is the castle, just as you come off the train. It's a splendid building, situated in a beautiful park. As you might imagine, there's a lot of history surrounding this castle, which was originally built in 1122. After being burned down by the Black Prince in 1346, it was rebuilt and extended.

Louis XIV was born here in 1638 and he eventually turned the château over to King James II of England after his exile from Britain in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. King James lived in the château for thirteen years, and his daughter Louise-Marie Stuart was born in exile here in 1692.

I could go on, but I won't! Suffice to say I was lucky to go yesterday as it was a beautiful day. Today it is pouring with rain and I'll be staying inside, nice and cosy.
What a beautiful building .. and well taken..

Great pov. I do like to think of how these were physically built in the days before mechanism! And how they did such a good job it has stood the test of time. Hope the physio worked for you.

It's a wonderful looking place. There tends to be something in these old large buildings that hasn't been discovered yet.

Great capture of this striking Château. The blue sky really complements the stone.

What a fabulous looking place and thank you for the historical information. I had somehow imagined James II living a fairly basic life while in exile, I now have a completely different understanding of that part of our history!

@pennystot Thanks Penny. Been struggling with a back problem for the last 4-5 months. Gradually coming to the end of it though. It's just old age and abuse, I suspect! I keep thinking I'm still 30!

@judithdeacon Yes, I suspect James was fairly comfortable there! ;-)

A gorgeous structure! You have a terrific PoV and I love the blue sky and wisps of clouds! It is really a shame there are so few nice things to photograph in France! ;-)
