Mongol Rally 2016

Yes indeed. Our son and two of his University friends have set off to do the Mongol Rally. They drive an old bucket of a car as far as possible towards Mongolia - a distance of around 10,000 miles. Yes. They do. They have raised over £2,000 for charity and have so far reached Austria. We went down to Goodwood Race Course to see them off on Sunday. Inside the car, they are wearing kimonos. As you do. To say we are concerned parents is an understatement. However there were over 300 cars on Sunday at Goodwood, with almost as many concerned parents. This is our boys' car. Their team name is the 'Slippery Gypies'. Keep your fingers crossed for them ... and for us!

Well good for them and how exciting for them too! Poor you though, just drink more wine and try not to worry!

As someone said on another post, oh to be that age again. Don't you know they're having a fabulous time - they're not the least interested in the things we as parents worry about. Love this shot.

What an interesting event! I'm curious how it works -- everyone on the same route? Same stops? Lots of cars? Must go google this!

@judithdeacon Yes, wine, that's about all I can do - we get an occasional update when they have access to wifi. So far we've had camping in a forest in Belgium, bridge jumping on the German border, camping in Austria, and glacier skiing somewhere in Austria. Great weather. Some trouble with car, but nothing too serious so far! That's it. No idea where they slept last night!

@taffy No, they select their own route, Taffy. Ours plan to head down through Europe to Turkey and onwards to Iran, and various 'Stans' before Russia and Mongolia ... if they get that far. And it's a big IF. There are some meet up 'party points' en route that they can participate in if they wish. They're hoping to meet some friends in Croatia. They plan to convoy through Iran as they have to be accompanied by a guide and so it's cheaper to do it with several cars together. Other than that, it's every man for themselves, and arrive in Ulan Bataar when you can, if you can! Cut off date for ours is 13 September as they have to get back for University. Car is supposed to be small, old and left behind afterwards. Spare tyres are an essential! I'm not at all worried about any aspect of this ... as you can imagine?!!!

What an amazing adventure for them! I know it's hard as parents when our kids do these sorts of things, but we can't keep them tied up & not go out into the world to explore, find themselves & others, etc etc. I hope they have a blast of a time...it certainly sounds like they will. Wishing them the best of luck :) Ps. Love their name...lol

OMG! I pray for their safety and your sanity while they're gone. I bet they're having a ball!
