I occasionally am lucky enough to see this lovely bird in the garden, but he's very skittish. He feeds on the grass, which I thought was quite unusual. However, Wikipedia tells me that 'the European green woodpecker spends much of its time feeding on ants on the ground and does not often 'drum' on trees like other woodpecker species.' Not the sharpest of images, as he doesn't stay still for long, but it's better than nothing.
Fantastic capture! This is the first time I've seen the European Green Woodpecker! Before I started this photo project I had no idea there were so many different types of woodpeckers. :-)
