I always knew that there was a cairn nearby, erected by Queen Victoria, in honour of her dearly beloved Prince Albert. We went in search of it yesterday and found it - more like a pyramid than a cairn - but also several other, smaller cairns, that I did not know about, erected in honour of several of Queen Victoria's children. The inscription on this one reads 'To the beloved memory of Albert the great and good Prince Consort. Erected by his broken hearted widow Victoria R. 21st August 1862'. That's our son standing beside it to give a bit of perspective!
It was a delightful 10 km walk, where we saw 8 Royal cairns and had some amazing views over Deeside and Balmoral castle. Another brilliant day for us.
However, the kids have gone now, the Christmas tree is down and it's that funny time of year where everything feels flat.
@christophercox I'll post another image or two over the next couple of days, but I counted 8 including this big one. The rest are smaller, but still significant cairns - there's one to commemorate the purchase of Balmoral estate and others for marriages of some of their numerous children etc. Quite fascinating.
Wow....that's amazing. And you really see the scale with your son in the picture. I'd never heard of them at all. So many amazing details in Victoria's story.
